Making Smudging Fans

This is a leg bone from a white tail deer. It has been cut to length to be used as the handle for this smudging fan. Almost any material can be used for the handle. Wood or antlers were commonly used.

This is the leg bone handle and a couple of the feathers that will be used for the 'fan'.

Turkey tail feathers to be used in fan.

Feathers have been added to the bone handle. I use a drill to clear the 'marrow channel' in the bone to insert the feathers and cement them with fletching glue.

Finishing touches have been added to fan. Handle is wrapped in deer sinew and rabbit fur has been added for accent.
